Review: Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer

book review Feb 25, 2021

Sophie Beer's Love Makes a Family is a picture board book for young readers. It shows in written form all the ways you can love people. At the same time, using photos, the book shows all the different ways a family can look.

Young readers learn that love isn't just words you say to other people. Love is an action word. It is how you interact with and care for other people. It is how you treat people and how you want to be treated by other people. But it's also a choice that you make. And the result of that choice results in how other people feel.

"Love is...playing on the weekend."

Each photo spread shows a different kind of family. All kinds of ages, genders, races, and sexual orientations are represented. Many children will be able to read this book and see their family unit depicted in this book's illustrations.

The one thing that makes all of these families a family, the book's theme illustrates, is love. The back of the book reads:

"Whether you have one parent, two moms, two dads, a mom, and a dad, or another wonderful caregiver, there's one thing that makes EVERY family a family... and that's LOVE!"

At just 24 pages, Love Makes a Family is a perfect book to read together with your young child. Dial Books for Young Readers is an imprint of Penguin House Young Readers Group. They published the first board books in the United States.
