Keep Your Tools At The Ready

This may seem like a variation on a few other posts I’ve done so far this month, but this principal can be applied to so many areas of organizing your life. When a chef is getting ready to cook a meal, they gather all the ingredients they will need together first. Then they chop, prep, and do whatever is necessary before starting to cook. This is not always how I cook y’all, I’m going to admit it right now. This is also why sometimes my onions and garlic are burning in the bottom of my pan as I’m prepping the next thing.

The idea behind it is solid however. If you have all your ingredients ready to go before you start cooking, as you need each item you will be able to add it in and move on to the next step.

The same idea applies to access of your cooking tools. If you are standing at the stove and all of a sudden you find yourself needing to grate a bit of lemon rind into your pot, but your plane grater is on the other side of your kitchen, disaster can ensue.

Having your most used tools right next to your stove can prevent most “I need x, y, or z tool but I can’t reach it” problems. I use a crock that was intended for flour storage, because I already had it on hand and it’s the perfect size. There are tons of options from plastic, to ceramic, to storage with different slots. Whatever works best for your needs, they probably sell it. If not, there is always the thrift store. Be creative.

  1. This is so totally true Beth! I know I used to be an all over the kitchen crazy mess of a cook. But now I am a lot more orderly. I prep first, I lay everything out on the counter behind me and I get things organized. When I do, there is less mess to clean up and my mind is less frazzled. When I don’t, I really don’t seem to enjoy the journey as much. What a metaphor for life in general, huh? Hugs to you today! 🙂

      Thank you for taking the time to read my post and to comment. Your comment about not planning and feeling frazzled in relation to cooking and how that can be a metaphor for life is spot on. I didn’t plan out my day in my bullet journal yesterday and while most people would think, “big deal, it’s one day”, I felt like a scattered mess all day long. It’s just how my brain is wired I guess.
